How to find your IP address on Windows 11 and 10

Windows can show your local IP in Settings or the command line. For your public IP, a lookup is needed.

Your public IP

Open iphere.org in any browser. Or, in PowerShell:

(Invoke-RestMethod https://iphere.org/ip).Trim()

In Command Prompt on Windows 10/11 (curl is built in):

curl https://iphere.org/ip

Local IP using Settings

  1. Open Settings → Network & internet.
  2. Choose Wi-Fi (or Ethernet) and click your connection's Properties.
  3. Find IPv4 address near the bottom.

Local IP using Command Prompt

  1. Press Win + R, type cmd, press Enter.
  2. Run: ipconfig
  3. Look for IPv4 Address under your active adapter. Default Gateway is your router.

For full details including DNS servers and the MAC address, run ipconfig /all.

Releasing and renewing

To request a fresh local address from your router, run ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew (you may briefly lose connection). To clear stale DNS results, run ipconfig /flushdns and check records with the DNS checker.

Which address do I need?

Gaming, remote desktop, port forwarding and servers usually need your public address plus a forwarded port to your local address. See public vs private IPs.

Frequently asked questions

What is my IP address in Command Prompt?

Run ipconfig and read the IPv4 Address line. That is your local address. Run curl https://iphere.org/ip for your public one.

What does 169.254.x.x mean on Windows?

Windows could not get an address from your router (DHCP) and assigned itself one. Check your cable, Wi-Fi and router.
