Am I using a VPN? How to tell
You can usually tell in seconds, and so can websites. Here is how the check works and how far to trust it.
The quick check
Open the IP checker. It compares your address against known VPN, proxy, Tor and datacenter networks and shows a banner either way. Also look at the location and provider: a different country or a hosting company name (instead of an internet provider) is a giveaway.
How VPN detection works
- Known VPN ranges: VPN companies rent blocks of addresses, and public lists track them.
- Datacenter networks: real homes rarely browse from cloud and hosting companies, so addresses owned by those are treated as likely VPN or proxy traffic.
- Tor exit nodes: the Tor project publishes the list of its exit addresses.
- Provider name: the organization behind the address, like a VPN brand or hosting company, is a strong hint.
Why it is a guess, not a guarantee
- False negatives: some VPNs and residential proxies use ordinary home addresses that look normal.
- False positives: some companies, universities and mobile carriers route traffic through networks that look like hosting.
- Lists lag: new VPN servers appear daily, so any list is slightly behind. We refresh ours automatically.
Why people care
Streaming services, banks and shops block detected VPNs, so a forgotten VPN is a classic cause of a site that will not load. Read website not loading? check your VPN. To see what else your address reveals, read how accurate IP location is.
Get it in a script

The response includes vpn_detected and network_type. See the API docs.
Frequently asked questions
Can websites tell I am using a VPN?
Often, yes. They compare your address against lists of VPN and datacenter networks, though not all VPNs are caught.
Does private browsing hide a VPN?
No. Private browsing does not change your IP address.
Is the VPN check always right?
No. It is a best-effort estimate that can miss VPNs on residential addresses or flag unusual networks.
