What happens when a domain expires?
Losing a domain is usually not instant. Most .com, .net and .org domains pass through several stages, and you can recover one at most of them, but the cost goes up.
Typical timeline for .com, .net, .org and similar
| Stage | Typical length | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Expiry date | Day 0 | The registration lapses. The website and email often stop working or show a parking page. |
| Renewal grace period | 0 to 45 days (set by the registrar) | You can usually renew at the normal price. |
| Redemption period | About 30 days | The domain is held and can be restored for an extra redemption fee, often $80 to $200 or more. |
| Pending delete | About 5 days | No recovery. The domain will be released. |
| Released | After roughly 70 to 80 days in total | Anyone can register it, and backorder services often snatch valuable names in seconds. |
Country-code domains (.uk, .de, .io and others) follow their own rules, and some have shorter timelines. Check with the registrar.
How to check where your domain is right now
- Run the domain through the WHOIS lookup.
- Read the Expires date and the Status chips. Auto-renew grace, Redemption period, Pending delete and Registrar hold each tell you which stage you are in.
- Note the Registrar and contact them straight away.
How to recover an expired domain
- In the grace period: log in to the registrar and renew normally.
- In redemption: ask the registrar to restore the domain and pay the redemption fee. You need to act through the current registrar.
- Pending delete: recovery is generally no longer possible. You can try to backorder it when it drops.
- Already re-registered: look it up. If someone else now holds it, you can contact them or consider a dispute only if you hold a trademark.
What breaks when a domain expires
Your website goes offline, and email sent to addresses at that domain bounces or goes missing. Other services tied to the domain (logins, payment systems, API callbacks and certificates) can fail too. Check the DNS records once it is renewed, because changes can take time to propagate.
Never lose a domain again
- Turn on auto-renew with a current card.
- Use a shared, monitored mailbox as the contact email.
- Renew for multiple years.
- Keep a list of domains and expiry dates, and re-check them with WHOIS twice a year.

Frequently asked questions
How long do I have to renew an expired domain?
Often up to 30 to 45 days at the normal price, then roughly 30 more days in a redemption period with a fee, depending on the registrar and the domain ending.
Can someone buy my domain the moment it expires?
Not immediately. It passes through grace, redemption and pending delete first. Some registrars auction or sell expired names early, though.
Will I lose my email when the domain expires?
Yes, email for that domain usually stops working until the domain is renewed and its DNS records are working again.
